Then there was Four Seasons Hotel Shenzhen. Heard a lot about the views from this one. And yeah, the pictures online are stunning. I even drove by it once, just to gawk at the building. It’s one of those places that screams “I’m expensive!” from a mile away. I checked the rates for a room with a “panoramic city view” and nearly choked on my coffee. My bonus wasn’t that big.
I’ve got this friend, let’s call him Dave. Dave actually stays in these kinds of places for work. Lucky sod. He told me, “Mate, after a certain price point, they’re all just trying to out-fancy each other.” He mentioned Park Hyatt Shenzhen as being pretty slick, and also the Mandarin Oriental, Shenzhen, which was the new kid on the block at some point, super modern. So, my actual experience trying to book? It was more about browsing and getting frustrated. I’d see a place like The St. Regis Shenzhen, the one in that super tall KK100 tower. I actually went up to their bar once. Not staying, just for a drink. The view? Absolutely killer. You feel like you’re on top of the world. The price of my single gin and tonic, though? Could’ve bought a decent dinner with that. I felt a bit like a fish out of water, everyone else looked like they owned a yacht.
And the lists just keep going, don’t they? You see names like Raffles Shenzhen popping up. Supposedly very exclusive, very “if you have to ask the price, you can’t afford it.” Then there are others, maybe a bit less shouty but still up there. I even stumbled upon some that were more like ultra-luxury serviced apartments pretending to be hotels.
What did I learn from all this window shopping and almost-booking?
- Shiny Pictures: They all look incredible online. Master photographers, I tell you.
- Service Levels: Generally, you get what you pay for in terms of staff. Very attentive, sometimes a bit too formal for my liking, like I should be wearing a monocle.
- Location, Location, Location: A lot of these big hitters are clustered around Futian CBD. Makes sense, that’s where the money is.
- Brand Tax: You’re definitely paying extra for the fancy name on the building.
In the end, you know what I did after all that “research”? I found a really nice, well-reviewed business hotel that wasn’t on any “Top 10 Luxury” list. It was clean, the bed was comfy, the Wi-Fi was fast, and it didn’t cost me an arm and a leg. I had a great couple of nights, and my bank account didn’t cry. Maybe those super-duper fancy places are for a different kind of trip, or a different kind of person. For me, the whole “top ten” hunt felt a bit overhyped. I guess I found my own version of luxury: a good night’s sleep without the financial hangover. That’s my practical take on it, anyway.
