Okay, here’s my take on a blog post about figuring out the cost of building a home sauna/steam room in my bathroom. I’m keeping it real, folks, no fancy jargon!
Alright, so I’ve been obsessed with the idea of having a sauna right in my bathroom. Yeah, I know, sounds bougie, but hear me out! Imagine, long day, stressed out of my mind, and BAM! I can just melt away in my own personal sweat lodge. So, I started digging into the cost of this little dream of mine. Spoiler alert: it’s not as straightforward as I thought!
First thing I did? Googled “bathroom sauna cost.” Duh. But the results were all over the place. Some were talking about those little portable steam generators, others about full-on cedar-lined saunas. That’s when I realized I needed to get specific about what I actually wanted.
I knew I didn’t want a totally separate sauna room taking up half the bathroom. Space is a premium, people! I was thinking more along the lines of a souped-up shower with a steam generator. Basically, sealing up the existing shower, adding a bench, and installing a steam system. Sounded easy enough…right?
Next step: hitting up the local home improvement stores – Lowe’s and Home Depot. I wanted to get a feel for the prices of steam generators, tiles (since I might need to re-tile to properly seal the shower), and benches. The steam generators ranged from like $300 for a basic one, to over $2000 for a fancy one with all the bells and whistles (aromatherapy dispenser, digital controls, the works!). I eyeballed some nice-looking tiles, figuring another few hundred bucks there.
Then came the reality check. I talked to a few contractors, and that’s when the price jumped way up. See, it’s not just about slapping in a steam generator. You gotta worry about proper ventilation, waterproofing, electrical work, and potentially even reinforcing the walls to handle the moisture. One guy quoted me $5000-$8000 just for the labor! My jaw dropped.

So, I started looking into alternatives. Maybe those portable steam generators weren’t so bad after all? They’re basically just a little steamer you plug in, and you hang a towel over the shower rod to trap the steam. Definitely not the same as a real sauna, but a whole lot cheaper (like $100-$200). I even considered just taking super-hot showers for a while, haha!
Ultimately, I’m still weighing my options. The dream of a built-in steam shower is definitely tempting, but that price tag is a tough pill to swallow. For now, I think I’m going to try the portable steamer route and see if that scratches the itch. Maybe down the road, when I’ve saved up a bit more, I’ll revisit the full-blown sauna project.
