My Grand Plan for Shenzhen Nightlife – 2020 Edition

So, 2020. Shenzhen. I was all hyped up, you know? Heard all this chatter. Stuff like Shenzhen was the place to be after dark. People saying it was super lively, even more than some other big cities. Sounded like my kind of scene. My plan was simple: dive in, check out a bunch of spots, and then, you know, share the good stuff. Like a real hands-on guide to the best clubs.

The Big ‘Research’ Trip

I actually set out to do this. Thought I’d start with some of the known areas. Got myself ready, figured I’d hit a few places in one night, take some mental notes. Maybe even jot some things down on my phone if I wasn’t too busy soaking it all in. This was gonna be my big project for a bit, documenting the vibe, the music, the crowds. Proper field work, I called it. I was really looking forward to getting into it, making a real log of what was hot and what was not.

And Then… 2020 Really Happened

But yeah, you know how 2020 went. It was like one minute I was all pumped, ready to explore, and the next… well, things got weird. Real weird, real fast. My grand nightlife tour plans? They pretty much hit a brick wall. A very big, very sudden brick wall that nobody saw coming, right?

  • Suddenly, going out wasn’t so simple anymore.
  • Places I heard about were either empty, or had these crazy long lines just for a temperature check.
  • The whole vibe just… deflated. Like a balloon someone pricked.

I remember one evening, I actually ventured out, full of hope. The streets felt different, almost spooky. The usual buzz and energy I was expecting? Gone. Just gone. Some places I’d pinned on my map were just dark, totally shut. Others that were open had staff looking more stressed than welcoming. It wasn’t the vibrant, carefree scene I’d pictured from all the talk. Not even close, man.

So, My ‘Club Recommendations’?

So, what are my 2020 Shenzhen club recommendations after all that? Ha! That’s the funny part, isn’t it? My detailed notes on club interiors, drink prices, and DJ sets? They pretty much don’t exist. Zilch. Nada. Instead, my “practice record” for that year, the one I was so eager to build, looks a lot different than I imagined.

It turned into a record of:

  • How quickly your big plans can just go poof.
  • Figuring out the best spots for takeout when everything else was basically a no-go zone.
  • Learning how to not go stir-crazy indoors for weeks, then months, on end.

That became my actual Shenzhen 2020 experience. Not exactly the thrilling nightlife exposé I’d planned to write and share, was it? My big investigation into Shenzhen’s clubs sort of fizzled out before it even properly started. So, if you were looking for a list of hotspots from me for that year, well, this story of my non-adventure is what I’ve got. It’s a record, alright, just not the one I set out to make, not by a long shot.

Maybe 2020 taught me that sometimes the best “practice” is just learning to roll with the punches, to adapt. And my record from that time? It’s a testament to a very, very strange year in Shenzhen, where the liveliest spot was often your own living room, trying to connect to dodgy Wi-Fi for a video call. That’s the real tea from 2020 for me.
