My Little Community Project Journey

So, I had this idea, right? I live pretty close to the university, and I thought, “Man, it’d be cool to get some students looped into a local thing, something hands-on.” My brain was just buzzing with plans for this small community garden. You know, fresh air, growing your own stuff, the whole nine yards. Figured it’d be a decent break for them from all those textbooks and staring at screens all day.

I actually wasted a fair bit of time checking out spots, wondering what to plant. Even had a rough draft of a little flyer in my head. My first big thought was, “Okay, how do I even get the word out so they know this thing exists?” I kicked around the idea of sticking a notice up on some community board, maybe at that coffee shop students always seem to be at. All real casual, totally public. Nothing creepy or pushy, you get me.

But then, life, like it always does, just smacks you with a curveball. Just when I was about ready to print those darn flyers, my old Uncle Joe, who’s a couple of towns over, had a bit of a health issue. Turned out okay in the end, thank heavens, but he needed someone to give him a hand for a good while. His garden, way bigger and more established than my little pipe dream, was his absolute pride and joy, and he was pretty cut up thinking it would all go to weeds.

So, what are you gonna do? Family’s family, you know? I shelved my little local project and shot over to Uncle Joe’s. And let me tell you, his garden was a real operation. We’re talking fruit trees galore, a massive vegetable patch, the whole shebang. I thought I knew a thing or two about planting stuff, but boy, did I learn a ton from him, even with him mostly barking orders from his comfy armchair.

  • Got the lowdown on how to actually prune apple trees right (turns out I was butchering them before!).
  • He showed me his ancient secret for keeping slugs off the lettuce – who knew coffee grounds were the magic bullet?
  • We even managed to cobble together a new compost bin, well, he supervised, and I did all the grunt work.

Ended up spending the entire summer over there. My little community garden idea with the students? Poof. Totally out of my head, to be honest. But you know what? Didn’t regret it one bit. Helping Uncle Joe, watching his garden just explode with life, and actually learning a real skill from the old guy was way more satisfying than I could’ve planned.

It’s funny how the things you set out to do, they just don’t always pan out like you think. But then something else pops up, totally out of the blue, and it ends up being even better. I never did get that student garden going near the university. Maybe I will someday. But the stuff I learned at Uncle Joe’s place, that’s stuck with me for good. And his tomatoes? Best I’ve ever tasted, hands down. No contest.

So yeah, that was my “practice” for that particular season. Not what I had on the whiteboard, but a pretty decent outcome, all things considered. Made me realize that sometimes just showing up and lending a hand where you’re actually needed is the most “connecting” thing you can do, way more than any flyer.
