Okay, so let me tell you about how I went about putting together this list, my own little guide to places in Futian. It wasn’t like I woke up one day and bam, it was done. Nah, it took some real legwork.
My Starting Point
It all began because, honestly, I was curious. Futian’s a big place, tons of nooks and crannies, and I figured there had to be a bunch of spots people didn’t really know about, or at least, spots I didn’t know about. I thought, “Hey, why not try and map some of these out?” Not for any grand reason, just, you know, for myself and maybe a few friends if they asked.
Hitting the Pavement
So, the first thing I did was just decide to dedicate some weekends to it. I put on my comfy shoes, because man, there was a lot of walking involved. I started in areas I was kinda familiar with, just to get my bearings. Then, I branched out. I would literally walk up and down streets, sometimes peeking down alleyways – safely, of course!
I made sure to have my phone handy. Not just for maps, but I started taking quick notes. Sometimes it was just a name I saw, other times maybe a general vibe of a street or a block. I tried to be observant, you know? Like, what kind of signs were up, what seemed to be bustling, what looked a bit more low-key.
Gathering the Scraps
After a few of these walking sessions, my phone notes were a mess. So, I began the process of trying to organize them. I sat down and transferred everything to my computer. I started grouping things, maybe by general location first, like, “this cluster of notes is for the area around Coco Park,” or “these are more towards the Chegongmiao side of things.”

I also did a bit of online searching, not gonna lie. Sometimes I’d see a place and then later I’d look up if there was any general info, just to confirm a name or a very basic idea of what it was. But mostly, the core info came from just being out there.
Making Sense of It All
This is where it got a bit more like detective work, but fun detective work! I looked at my notes and tried to remember the feel of each area.
- I noted down places that seemed to be popular or busy.
- I jotted down observations about the kind of atmosphere.
- I made a point to remember if a place was easy to spot or kinda hidden.
This part took time. It wasn’t just about listing names; it was about recalling those little details from my walks.
The “Directory” Takes Shape (Sort Of)
Eventually, I had this document, a pretty long one, with all these entries. I organized it as best I could. I tried to put things in a logical order, maybe by sub-district or major road. It wasn’t super fancy, just something practical. I realized pretty quickly that a “complete” list is impossible. Futian is always changing, new places pop up, old ones disappear. So, it’s more of a snapshot, really.
Looking back, it was quite an effort. Lots of walking, lots of note-taking, lots of trying to piece things together. But it was also pretty interesting to just explore the district with a bit more focus. You see things you’d normally just walk right past. So yeah, that’s basically how I went about creating my personal rundown of spots. It was a process, for sure!
